Abstract: | At independence, Zambia inherited a distinct dual legal system: the native courts applied largely customary law and the subordinate courts applied both statutory and customary law. Even among native courts, there was a distinction between native courts in Barotseland (now Western Province) and those in the rest of the country, due to Barotseland's special status as a protectorate. This article looks at the administration of justice in Barotseland before the Local Courts Act, and at the introduction of this Act in 1965 and the integration of the Barotse native courts into the national local courts system.
