Abstract:South Africa's economy is in need of revival, but it cannot be ignored that it is the only African economy that has the ability to make a real contribution to the economic development of neighbouring countries and further afield. This paper highlights the economic marginalization of Africa, the causes of the economic regression of the continent, possible strategies to counter it and finally, the role that South Africa can play in an African economic revival. The emphasis throughout falls on sub-Saharan Africa, and specifically on the industrialization of the region, since, in the long run, growth in manufacturing, production and exports will be required for sustainable and rapid productivity growth.
