Abstract: | This article describes the contribution of traditional healing towards health care in Northern Province, South Africa. It is based on research conducted in the Dikgale area in 1997. Seventy North Sotho traditional healers were interviewed on sociodemographic and trainig characteristics, illnesses, diseases or problems most commonly treated by them, as well as the symptoms, etiology and treatment of these diseases. Traditional healers were found to be numerous, accessible at hours convenient to patients, familiar with a range of health and social problems and in favour of collaboration with the biomedical health care system.
