Abstract: | The Ahmadu Bello University sewage treatment plant was monitored for its efficiency in reducing faecal coliform and faecal streptococci densities. Water samples were collected from nine sites extending over a distance of about 13.000 metres below the plant. A bacteria density of 10.000/100 ml each was found for faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci at the last site located below Jama's village along the Kubanni River. Five salmonella were isolated from effluent water. Three sites were monitored on the Kubanni Lake for faecal streptococci and faecal coliforms. The bacteria densities for these two organisms were low. At a site near the intake structure to the proposed water purification plant, 96% of water samples contained no faecal coliforms while 91% contained no faecal streptococci. Fig., notes, pl., tab. |
