Abstract:Under the health care policy and structure developed in Zimbabwe since independence, specific programmes that bear directly on child survival and development were initiated, and incorporated into the overall primary health care strategy. Most of these programmes relate to the major causes of infant and early childhood morbidity and mortality and thus address themselves to the priority areas in child health and survival, viz. immunization against common preventable diseases, nutrition, maternal and child health, and diarrhoeal disease control.
