Abstract:Aim is to examine, using Tanganyika as example whether mandated territories were in fact, administered in any way differently from ordinary colonies. An analysis of the administration of Sir Horace Byatt (1919-1925) and Sir Donald Cameron (1925-1931), the working of indirect rule, native administration and the mandate, and achievements of the native administrations, leads to the conclusion that the existence of the mandate made very little difference in the establishment and functioning of local government institutions.
