Abstract:This article has been based on experience in N.Rhodesia and Nigeria. It is submitted, however, that the general principles are applicable to other territories. In view of the fact that English and native law can exist side by side conflict between the two laws is in most cases avoided. A study of the various aspects of the civil and criminal law will show how this conflict is avoided and will show also certain cases in which conflict has in fact arisen.
