Abstract:The conditions contributing to the food crisis in Nigeria find their explanation from three sources: the policies of the former colonial government, the uncritical acceptance and continuation of these policies by the post-independence regimes, and the specific needs of modern agribusiness. Government agriculture policy has centred on high technology and capital intensive agriculture, which has benefited the interests of the international corporations active in agribusiness rather than the small-holders and peasants. The author successively examines the current situation, the situation of Nigerian agriculture during the colonial era and the early period of independence, the green revolution strategy, and the kinds of projects in progress (the river basin development authorities and the big dam projects, and the integrated rural/ agricultural development projects).
