Abstract:More than 180 million Africans in 27 countries are suffering from various degrees of starvation. In such circumstances it seems imperative to confront the following question: How and why has Africa come to such an inculculable humiliation and grief? An understanding of Africa's debilitating ailment, and suggestions towards a remedy, requires serious cogitation. This article outlines a précis that lays bare how this condition came to pass, and a few thoughts towards an historical alternative. Sections: the nature of the crisis - the alternative of selfreliance - internal reconstruction - external activities and collective self-reliance - the quest for self-reliance. - Ref.
