Abstract:Documentation of the case of Malawi, which has experienced six years of adjustment by broadly accepting the advice of the IMF and World Bank. There bave been improvements in the efficiency of resource allocation and production. Whether real improvements will occur in 'basic needs' services in rural areas depends on future economic growth and aid levels. Important reforms of the colonial economic structure have yet to be attempted, notably for share-cropping schemes, for the discriminatory measures which continue to deny customary land farmers the right to grow certain crops, and for the state monopoly of the marketing of key peasant export crops. At the present juncture, it is difficult to be very optimistic about Malawi's development prospects. App., bibliogr., notes, ref.
