Abstract:The Gezira Scheme has reached an interesting stage: the limit is being approached of that area north of the Sennar Dam which is irrigable from the Blue Nile by gravity flow. Of the three alternatives, namely further extension using pump lift, setting up new schemes elsewhere, and intensifying the existing irrigated area, the last has obvious attractions. Attention is currently being given to ways of increasing net production within the framework of the existing irrigation system. Some modifications in production patterns were introduced in the 1960s, and a five-year development plan has been prepared by the Sudan Gezira Board which proposes even greater changes in the near future. The changes both past and future raise many questions of economic and organizational importance and it is the purpose of this paper to explore some of these, particularly as they bear upon the efficient use of resources. Possible changes in policy concerning organization and management are discussed. Notes, tables.
