Abstract:In 1968 the authors, members of the Economic Research Bureau, University of Dar es Salaam, participated in a training and information gathering exercise with the then newly appointed Regional Economic Secretaries. They afterwards accompanied the R.E.S.'s on a field trip to assess regional requirements and collect basic data. This paper indicates the leading impressions and conclusions obtained regarding the prospects for regional planning in Tanzania and the extent to which the appointment of R.E.S.'s might serve to assist the initial implementation of regional planning.
