Abstract:Although the Passport Conference of 1926 specifically recognised the right to travel, the role of the passport in relation to freedom of movement, can be regarded as a restrictive one. In South Africa, as in most states, no reason need be given for the refusal of a passport and there is no right of appeal against the decision of the Minister of the Interior. The role of the passport and present-day passport practice in South Africa are discussed in this article. Notes; ref.
