Abstract: | Since the mid-1970s there has been a dramatic escalation in the extent of poverty amongst South Africa's black population, both in the urban as well as the bantustan areas. The government and most employers, however, argue that the standard of living of blacks has improved substantially over the last ten years. This article first refutes the arguments of the government and the employers by proving that the data they make use of are highly misleading. Then it examines the main causes of increasing poverty in the rural and urban areas, and shows that poverty related diseases such as tuberculosis, cholera, measles, hypertension, and malnutrition are increasing among blacks.
