Abstract:Investigation of the potential effects of various income-redistribution schemes on the pattern of income distribution. The study employs a quantitative, disaggregated model that integrates the expenditure, employment, and income-generation processes. The model is applied to Kenya not as a case study per se, but as an analysis of the impact of alternative redistribution policies on income distribution using the economic and social structure of an African country. It is suggested that policy packages involving both transfers and other policies aimed at changing the structure of the economy would have a greater impact than mere transfers of income. The greatest improvement in the relative distribution of income occurs when rural productivity is raised. App., notes, ref.
