Abstract:This article is based on a research project (The Inter-Industry Transactions of the South African Economy in 1956/57, unpublished, Pretoria, 1961) that was sponsored by the Office of the Economic Adviser to the Prime Minister. The present article sets out the results of an investigation into the preparation of a reasonably reliable inter-industry frame-work of the S.African economy in the form of two input-output tables for the years 1956/57: i) Purpose and basic sources; 2) Presentation and brief description of the tables; 3) Some aspects of the production structure; Appendix A, Notes on statistical shortcomings; Appendix B, Reconciliation of Industrial Classifications.
