Abstract:	The courts in South Africa have accepted that an invasion of privacy is an agression upon a person's personality rights actionable under the actio injuriarum. This article considers the protection afforded consumers (persons which purchase or use, or are likely to purchase or use, goods or services provided by the private or public sector) by an action for invasion of privacy in relation to consumer-credit transactions and consumer services. The discussion is limited to those areas which the author regards as important: credit bureaux; consumer investigators; debt collection; mailing lists; banking; insurance; professional services; public gervices. The common law action for invasion of privacy is a useful weapon of consumer protection in South Africa. Notes.
