Abstract:The Limba, numbering 180,000, live in the north of Sierra Leone and are the third largest tribal group. Practically nothing has been published on the Limba. This brief article discusses only one aspect of their political organization - the virtues they attribute to and expect of their chiefs: ability to 'speak', to know everything that takes place in his 'country', and generosity. The traditional Limba concept of chiefship is both an ideal and also a practice in the day to day life of a village. Limba chiefship differs in several ways from that of the Mende and the Temne.
