Abstract:The author gives an account of the throne succession in Bafut (one of the large Fondoms actually comprising about 37,000 inhabitants) in 1968 and of the events which followed as seen against the background of tradition and modern political developments. To understand this seemingly sudden struggle in the Fondom, he first gives an outline of its complicated political set-up, then proceeds to a survey of the events surrounding the succession and finally deals with more fundamental developments which might have caused the political crisis. This is done in the following sections: The traditional political system Internal organization of the Secret societies - Rules of succession - Historical background - Succession to the Throne - The reign of Aboombi II.
