Abstract: | Different authors in the developed countries have attempted to examine different aspects of the 'range' of a good. In the developing countries however, studies of that type are rather uncommon. The study reported here is part of a much wider study by the same author, 'Service Centres and Consumer Behaviour Within the Nigerian Cocoa Area' (1971) (in: Geografiska Annaler, Vol. 53B, No. 2, p.76-94), and represents a pioneer attempt in analysing the pattern of consumer behaviour in an developing African country. Within the study area, South-Western Nigeria, 59 settlements were selected in three political divisions (Oyo, Ife and Ilesha Divisions) and 1,310 individuals were interviewed to find out their travel pattern in the purchase of selected goods and services. The study reveals the disparities in the distribution of certain consumer goods (services) in the study area as indicated by the variability in the purchase travel distance for these goods (services).
