| Abstract: | In this book the author synthesizes primary research material with the large body of existing literature to produce a contribution to the debate surrounding the past and future prospects of apartheid. He traces the historical evolution of the Transkei region from precolonial times through the successive eras of segregation and apatheid. He focuses on the origins and role of Transkei as a labor reserve and argues that only by understanding that the underdevelopment of Transkei is integral to the development of South Africa, and that Transkei's 'independence' is political and not economic, it is possible to understand the emergence and articulation of class structures within Transkei itself. |
