Abstract: | Long before the establishment of colonial rule in what later became Nigeria the different groups of people that inhabited the Akwa Ibom area interacted with each other and with their neighbours outside the region. Factors that promoted intergroup relations were migration, trade (in which the principal items were slaves, palm oil and palm kernel), religion, intermarriage, and tribal warfare. The Akwa Ibom people include the Ibibio, Oron, Annang, Uruan, Iben, Eket, Okobo, and Ibeno. The neighbours of the Akwa Ibom are, amongst others, the Efik, Camerouns, Aro, Igbo, Ekoi, Ijo, Andoni (Opobo), Bonny, and Ogoni. Bibliogr., sum. |
