Abstract:Agricultural economists and agencies supplying farmers with credit, such as banks, are generally concerned about 'high' agricultural land in prices in relation to the return on farm land. The purpose of this paper is to study the rate of return on farm land based on an recent comprehensive survey of land rents in South African agriculture. It is shown that the Ricardian theory of land rents can provide a revealing picture of the state of health of farming. Notes, tab., fig.
