Abstract:In the 1980s, the claims the government of Swaziland made to the Ingwavuma district of northern Zululand, have been accepted by the South African government. To legitimate this deal numerous historical arguments have been used. This article examines the nineteenth century history of the area north of Zululand in order to dispel some of the fallacies raised in this debate. Map, notes.
