Abstract: | The situation which rise gave to the initial British intervention at Lagos in 1851, leading op to British annexation in 1861, is fully intelligible only by reference to the history of Lagos during the previous half-century. In the early development of the 'Lagos Question', the key figure is Adele, who as King of Lagos and for a period (c.1821-1835) in exile at Badagry dominated the politics of the Lagos area between c. 1807 and c. 1837. The present article attempts a detailed reconstruction of this man's career. Notes. |
