Abstract: | Of all character in Southern African literature, it is the Zulu king Shaka (c. 1787-1828) who appears most diversely. He is used as a character in an extraordinary range of works of different genres and styles, and has been right there throughout the twisting course of the development of literature in South Africa. So. concentration on Shaka as a literary motif does serve to crystallize some preliminary speculations on how literature has evolved in Southern Africa. Ref. |
