Abstract:Examination of the efforts which have been made to combat criminality in Zambia since independence and of the role of the legislature and judiciary in this connection. The effectiveness of these efforts, which have been based on the policy of deterrence, generally by the regular imposition of long prison sentences, is assessed. The 'public' response as characterised by the infliction of 'instant justice' on suspects by enraged members of the communi ty is also studied. As the efforts which have been made to curb crime clearly have not had the desired effect, possible alternative approaches to the problem of crime control are discussed. Notes.
