Abstract: | Critical review of the literature on the role of the African chiefs in colonial East Africa. The author argues that the writers reviewed wrongly look at chiefs as representatives who failed to deliver the goods to their people. He shows that chiefs were appointed, first and foremost, to promote colonialism. The office and duties of the colonial chief are discussed, as well as the reasons why chiefs were promoted, demoted or dismissed. The role of colonial African chiefs in the campaigns for and promotion of secular education in Kenya is then examined as an instance of what has not been dealt with in the literature, Notes. |
