Abstract:Examines mainly some of the major principles underlying the separation of juvenile justice from the adult criminal justice system, the special institutional measures which have been adopted, and the kinds of problems which have prompted their review. The discussion is illustrated by recent developments in England. The English legislation and the institutions which it created were the model for Kenya's Juvenile Ordinance of 1934 which remained in force until replaced by the Children and Young Persons Act 1963. These form the source of the current provisions governing juvenile courts, approved schools, remand homes and permitted dispositions available to courts dealing with juveniles. Notes.
