Abstract:The data and discussion in this paper show the importance of the interaction of both supply and demand considerations in determining the size and composition of the labor force in rural Kenya. A principal objective of this paper is to explore the relative importance of supply and demand considerations for determining the size of the economically active population in traditional economies. Specifically it is shown that in economies like that of rural Kenya forces of supply and demand interact dynamically to determine the size and composition of the labor force to a greater extent than has commonly been demonstrated in the literature. Examination of the longitudinal employment data disaggregated by age and sex indicates that there is a considerable degree of substitution of labor within households in rural Kenya. This substitutability appears to be influenced by dynamic aspects of both labor supply and labor demand. A second major objective of this research is to describe this phenomenon of intrahouse-hold substitution of labor and to note its relevance in the broader context of Kenya's economic development.
