| Abstract: | Between the higher rungs of the labour market, which are dominated by whites, and the lower end of the job queue, where Africans dominate, is an intermediate category of coloured and Asian workers. This three-fold segmentation of the South African labour market is confirmed by this study, a detailed micro study of a particular labour market, namely South African foundries. This article, which is mainly based on union records, distinguishes between three labour markets: the secondary market, the subordinate primary market, and the independent primary market. To illustrate the characteristics of the different labour markets, it refers to the biographies of five men who work in the foundries. Notes, sum. in French. |
