Abstract: | The system of transportation of trade goods in East Africa depended almost totally upon a body of caravan carriers. The first section deals with the following questions: who were porters, how were they recruited, how were caravans structurally organized and what were the porters' perceptions of the system itself. The second section looks at what happened to porters and the system of human porterage in colonial East Africa between 1890 and 1920. Notes. |
