Abstract: | The future of Basutoland, The Bechuanaland Protectorate and Swaziland, once mainly a matter of discussion between South Africa, Britain and the inhabitants of the territories, is rapidly assuming wider international importance. Several factors have an influence in the future of the three territories: the international factor, the tribal factor, the economic factor. Dr. Verwoerd offered to assist the economic development of the three territories. It is unlikely that the Territories will prove to be willing to help Dr. Verwoerd to develop his Bantustan policy, by agreeing to form part of it, although Basutoland and the Bechuana Protectorate will form almost wholly African territories likely to cooperate with any Bantustans that may emerge in South Africa. Swaziland, even remaining multiracial, might naturally co-operate with any Zulustan. Only Swaziland is likely to become economically viable in the near future. All three territories will gain from economic relations with South Africa. Map; photographs. |
