Abstract: | The usual difficulties of assessing historical figures are exaggerated in Guggisberg's case. Was he a colonial Governor pure and simple, a faithful colonial official who tried to do his work efficiently within the narrow limits of colonialism, as the younger generation of radical nationalists alleges? Or was he an unconventional Governor who went beyond the limits of colonialism to bring real progress to the people of the Gold Coast? Guggisberg was undoubtedly devoted to the physical development of the African condition, and in this respect he stood out clearly above all other colonial governors of the Gold Coast. But Guggisberg appears to be one of those who, in the early part of the 20th century, equated economic development with progress. It is therefore in the area of economic and social development that Guggisberg contributed most to the development of the Gold Coast, in spite of his limitations. Notes. |
