Abstract: | The role played by women both in cocoa production and in agriculture as a whole is investigated on the basis of surbvey data collected in connection with a proposed cocoa rehabilitation programme in the Ashanti region, southern Ghana. A brief description of the survey areas is followed by details of the characteristics of the total population. The agricultural labour force is defined and the distribution of all land resources between members of the agricultural labour force is detailed. Finally the role played by different types of labour on farms is covered. Throughout, the position of women is compared to that of men and finally interpreted in terms of their contrasting responsibilities towards one another and their off spring. Ref., tab. |
