Abstract: | Domestic workers display few overt signs of dissatisfaction and their voice of complaint is rarely heard. They are often viewed as 'deferential workers' who accept the legitimacy of their own subordination in the social order. This paper suggests that the deference attributed to the domestic worker is more apparent than real; it describes the vulnerability and powerlessness of black women in South Africa and their considerable dependence on their employers.
