Abstract: | The African woman mayor, judge, doctor, lecturer, business manager, parliamentarian, author, or secretary in Nairobi, Kenya, is almost certainly a married woman who combines the traditional role of housewife with the new role of career woman. Three questions are discussed in this paper: How did she get where she is? How does she find her new status? How does she view the future? It is argued that access to education has been the key to her present position; that her present new status is painful and in the main ambiguous because the range of roles traditionally assigned to men and women are undergoing irreversible redefinition; and that the three major features of her future status are premarital chastity, monogamy and a marital relationship of equality and mutual respect.
