Abstract:Consequence of the forthcoming Italian and British Somali independence: nomadic nations with modern constitutions and ambitions. To the question of whether one can raise standards within the traditional social context the Cairo conference of the FAO. responded that only by settling down could a nomad advance. The nomads themselves hold a contrary view. They are in favour of a nomadic betterment programme and for improving the lot of a nomad, as a nomad. Thus nomadic self-consciousness is coupled with a desire to share in the benefits of modern civilization. The activities of several international organizations concerned with the situation of nomads are discussed in the present article.
