Abstract: | One of the significant elements in the increasing level of urbanisation in Malawi is the de development of new, relatively small towns that are growing at fairly rapid rates. It is probably the case that rural to urban migration is a major reason for population movement in a developing country. A second explanation, given both a primarily agricultural base and a high birth rate, is the search for unused, arable land. But another important type of migration is rural-rural, partly driven by the need to earn a cash income. Hence thi s article aims 1) to explore district-level population movements in Malawi, as documented in the 1977 census; 2) to project these into longrun estimates of population distribution in the country; and 3) to make suggestions regarding the implications for development policy. - Notes, tab. |
