Abstract: | Much of the literature on African migration suggests that most individuals who move to major cities come directly from rural environments and arrive with agricultural skills. The present study demonstrates that a host of different patterns of spatial and economic mobility exist which require a number of concurrent strategies to harness the talents of urban-bound migrants. Through examination of individual migration histories, the analysis shows that few migrants are lifetime ruralto-urban movers. Most continue to move up and down the urban hierarchy as they pass through the stages of their life-cycles. The study is limited to analyses of migrant characteristics in three cities in Nigeria.
