Fertility and Infertility
Abstract:This study examines, firstly, the differences, if any, in the socioeconomic characteristics of migrant and nonmigrant Liberian women, and, secondly, whether differences in socio-economic characteristics lead to differential fertility between the two groups. The study is based on data derived from a ten percent sample of the Liberian population, collected during the 1974 census. It focuses on a. subsample of migrant and nonmigrant, native-born women in the child-bearing ages of 15 to 49. The research findings only partially support the hypothesis that migrant women will exhibit higher levels of education and work status and lower levels of fertility than nonmigrant women. While migration appears to be selective of women with slightly higher socioeconomic status, the fertility of migrant woman is not consistently lower than that of nonmigrant women. Bibliogr., notes.
