Abstract:The debate on the 'Bantu expansion' has been notable for the relative absence of contributions by social and cultural anthropologists. This paper demonstrates the potential value of anthropological contribution to this debate and indicates some of the forms which such a contribution might take. Sections: the culture area approaches (the problem of method and the example of Herskovits; Murdock's contribution; Prins and Vansina) - where do we go from here - the structure of Southern Bantu social systems - anthropological evidence and historical-linguistic hypothes es: three examples (the riverain Bantu; the diffusion of fishing technology language change, conquest and culture change). Notes, ref., résumé, table.
