Abstract:The author attempts to analyse the meaning of migration. In this case it was tempting to connect the development of strong demographic pressure with gradual separation of workers from their means of production in the departure zone (what J.L. Amselle terms the 'migratory process'). After a brief description of the Togolese area the author shows, by trading the history of population growth in the south-east, that there is no automatic connection between demographic pressure and development of migration. Then he defines the mechanisms of domination by the capitalist mode of production in the Ouatchi social formation and he adumbrates the way in which migration itself affec ts the social formation. Sections: 1. The Ouatchi region of S-E. Togo (Brief history of demographic growth; Development of productive activities and mechanisms of social reproduction) - 2. Population growth, overpopulation and migration - 3. Forms of integration into the capitalist mode of production in S-E. Togo - Conclusion. Fig., tables; ref.
