Abstract: | Examines the life of the Jamaican Robert Campbell who emigrated to Lagos in 1862. Before he emigrated to Lagos. he stayed in America, where he met a significant number lof blacks who had begun to articulate an alternative 'black nationality' outside the United States. In Lagos he started a newspaper in 1863; he was involved in the educational system of the missionary societies and participated in the literary and scientific life of the city. By late 1866 he was involved in the establisment of the Lagos Steam Sawing and Ginning Company. He continued in business until his death in 1884. Notes. |
