Abstract:With regard to the Mandated Territories, the question of 'nationality' is of special interest to international lawyers in that they create an exception to the rule that nationality alone is the regular means through which individuals can derive benefit from international law. This note attempts to determine the national status of the inhabitants of South West Africa: Before the Peace Treaty of 1919 - After the Peace Treaty - General conclusions on the question of the nationality of the inhabitants of 'B' and 'C' Mandated Territories - South African Citizenship Act of 1949- National status and mandate revocation - The legal effect of the change from South-West Africa to 'Namibia' - An incidental problem (South African 'Europeans' in South West Africa). Notes.
