Abstract:The article describes 1. The Minimum Sen tences Act, 1963 in Tanzania, which provides for a mandatory minimum sentence of imprisonnent to be imposed on a convicted offender, who will then undergo 24 strokes of coporal punishment. In addition, in certain circumstances, the court must order the payment of compensation. 2. The terms of the Act and some questions of interpretation with the relevant High Court decisions. The author's opinion is that the Act has come to stay and that it may well serve as a prototype of similar measures in other African countries.
