Abstract: | Text in Portuguese. Sum.: The main object of this paper is to present and discuss labour exchange systems in a small community of 90 peasant families in Santiago Island, Cape Verde. A brief introduction on the peculiar climatic conditions of the country is followed by a discussion of this major constraint on agricultural activity, which imposes the carrying out of a number of time-consuming crop operations in accordance with a rigid agricultural calendar. The article then goes an to discuss labour requirements and labour supply mechanisms, emphasizing particularly total labour expenditure and analysing four different sources for labour supply: domestic labour, manipulation of kinship relations and two different reciprocity schemes called djuda and junta mao. Finally a discussion of the relations between these labour exchange systems and family and land characteristics emphasizes the common function of these labour forms - i.e. to ensure the flexibility of the labour supply in a rigid agricultural calendar - as well as their more specific functions in relation to family and land.
