Abstract: | Sub-title: The interaction between diamond mining and Kono religious values (Sierra Leone). Against the background of the history of diamond mining in Kono district the author exposes how conflicts between the Kono and the Consolidated African Selection Trust Ltd. with regard to compensation schemes for disturbed sacred groves induced the Kono to react to the profanisation of the sacred places through actions of their secret societies. The Kono however realised that the pecuniary nature of the diamond industry rendered the desacralization of their sacred societies possible and consequently contributed themselves to the process of desecration by actions which were far from religious. Although the Kono did contribute in the physical defilement of the sacred society places, they used their traditional institutions to meet external challenges and in this respect these traditional religious institutions remain sacrosanct.
