Abstract:A description of the subsistence activities and consumption patterns of the Onicha Ibo of Nigeria and the Chakaka Poka of Malawi to show that seasonal hunger does occur. The author defines the concept of seasonal hunger in cultural terms: the causes are in Onicha shortage of farmland, low yields of the farms and high storage loss of staples. In Chakaka: the Poka have small farms in widely separated areas, a large number of males are away on labour migration and the fact that the Poka do not appear to be particularly careful cultivators.
