| Abstract: | The Middle Niger is usually regarded as being that part of the river between Bamako and Niamey. In most geographical accounts of the Middle Niger attention is focussed on the part above Timbuctu, for here, at Sansending, is the great barrage and irrigation project of the Office du Niger, here at Bamako, is the terminus of the railway from Dakar, and here, especially around Mopti and Bandiagra, are peoples of great anthropological interest, cave dwellers, swamp dwellers and fishermen. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to describe that part of the Middle Niger and its surrounding lands which are below Timbuctu. A part which has been relatively neglected, at least in the more easily available literature in English, but which has features of considerable geographical interest and which, like all other parts of West Africa, is undergoing notable economic development.
